‘Railroad Day’ to Take Place March 2nd in Washington DC

March 1, 2017 - With its goal of raising awareness of railway-related issues to decision-makers in our nation’s capital, Railroad Day on Capitol Hill has become an effective way to reach the ears of our Congressional leaders. A successful event truly relies on those in the Rail industry carrying our messages into Washington.

This year’s event takes place on Thursday, March 2, 2017, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown. Since 2015, the Railway Engineering-Maintenance Suppliers Association (REMSA) connects industry rail workers to their federal representatives in their home districts. This grassroots program enables small businesses in the rail supply industry to have a voice in Washington.

According to REMSA, a successful Railroad Day will build the foundation we need to extend the 45G railroad tax credit, preserve balanced regulation, and bring a more balanced transportation infrastructure spending policy.

Iron Horse Engineering 2016 Employee Appreciation Picnic a Success

August 15, 2016 - Recently, the families of Montville and Iron Horse companies came together for our 2nd annual employee and family appreciation picnic. On behalf of everyone at Montville and Iron Horse Engineering, we are so thankful for our team members and everything they do to make it such a great place to work.

Held at Pioneer Waterland, there were plenty of prizes, food and fun-filled activities. But before we get into raffle prizes and pictures, I’d love to explain more about how fantastic our employees are.

The first half of 2016 was spent focused on our company priority of improving safety. We just started the second half of the year with our new priority: keeping our eyes on the “little things” we can each do every day to continually improve. We’ve grown to more than 50 team members and continue to look for quality people who want to be part of our winning team. We genuinely cherish our teammates who’ve been with us for 10+ years and help to provide training and guidance for our newest team members. I am so excited to see how our continued growth gives even more opportunities for our long-time and new associates.

Our picnic was a chance to bring everyone together, with the “Montville Exclusive” the most sought-after prize giveaway: more than $150 in tools, $50 Home Depot gift card, polo shirts, and one paid day off.

We gave away awards for team members with perfect attendance and plenty of raffle prizes. Everyone enjoyed the hot dog bar (everything from chili and cheese to muffuletta), our very own Chuck and Nick made delicious pulled pork, and plenty of others brought their favorite sides and desserts to round out the picnic. Water slides, miniature golf, corn hole, go-cart competitions … We had a blast and look forward to next year!

Again … Thank You

Jay Roberts, president

Iron Horse, REMSA & MAGNET Host Ohio Congressman for Facilities Tour

March 9, 2016 - Iron Horse – along with REMSA and MAGNET – hosted Ohio Congressman Dave Joyce for a facilities tour to learn more about the burgeoning rail and manufacturing communities in Northeast Ohio.

Along with REMSA (the Railway Engineering Maintenance Suppliers Association) and MAGNET (the Manufacturing Advocacy & Growth Network), rail industry suppliers, rail safety associations and other local manufacturers joined us for a tour to see how two of our products – the rail boot and the rail seal – are helping to make railways safer and greener.

"We're thrilled to be able to represent a piece of the ever-expanding manufacturing industry in Northeast Ohio," said Tracie Roberts, VP of Iron Horse Engineering. "With Iron Horse's focus on safety and quality in the rail industry, having other rail industry experts and Congressman Joyce come together to discuss public policies that affect us all is vital to our industry.”

Iron Horse Engineering was started in 1989 with the invention of the rail boot and continues to supply transit to heavy haul freight lines. We are extremely proud that our innovative products are all made in America and are a crucial part of the manufacturing renaissance around Greater Cleveland.

The group discussed the private nature of America’s freight railroad network which, unlike other modes of freight transportation, does not rely on federal support for the expansion or maintenance of its network. Additionally, the group highlighted Congressman Joyce’s support for increased funding for the Section 130, Railway-Highway Crossing Program, which enhances safety for all users of the road, and his support of the Short Line Tax Credit, which enhances transportation options for Ohio’s manufacturers.

"America grew and prospered because of a strong railroad system,” said Congressman Joyce. “This longstanding American tradition is crucial to the economy in Northeast Ohio, and the nation, and I’m proud we have the manufacturing base right here in Ohio’s 14th District to make that happen.”

“It was a pleasure to host Congressman David Joyce, who continues to be a strong advocate for safe, efficient, and effective rail network,” said Sean Winkler, Grassroots Coordinator at REMSA. “Iron Horse Engineering’s activism and willingness to take part in the public policy process benefits the entire rail supply industry.”

The event concluded with a networking lunch featuring Gena Shelton from Operation Lifesaver, who spoke about rail safety and offered some sobering statistics:

  • It takes 18 football fields (or 1 to 1.5 miles) for an average freight train to stop. Railroad crossing safety is critical.

  • More than 50% of vehicle incidents at railroad crossings had the proper lights and gates.
